This book began as a manual for my son on all that I know about life and business – the manual that I almost didn’t get a chance to write.

As many of you know, I have had the opportunity and the blessing to be an entrepreneur for over three decades. I have had a tremendous journey full of stumbles, falls and the exhilaration of incredible success and the ability to create a life that is meaningful, impactful and of my own design.

Certainly there were challenges along the way especially being a single full-time dad with a six-year-old son. But that beautiful boy became the driving force behind most everything I was doing.

Simply put, he was my “why”!

I wanted to be not only a good father but a good role model to provide him all he needed to live the life he dreamed of, a life that he felt was worthwhile and a life where he had the ability to impact others.

On June 27, 2009 a shoelace brought this all into greater clarity for me. On that day, I was having a challenging morning and decided to take out my aggression on a downhill bike ride to the gym. As I was coming to the bottom of the hill at almost 30 miles an hour my shoelace got caught in the chain and what started out as a bike ride quickly became a flight…which was fine until the landing.

Evidently, I came down my head was completely unconscious and when I came to I had no feeling on the right side of my body and I began to have problems speaking. As they were putting me into the ambulance taped down to a backboard I just stared at the lights asking myself, “Did I give Jeremy everything he needed?”

Now I knew that he would be taken care of financially because of how I set up my life on that front; However, did I really give him what he needed to live a life of meaning, a life of impact and a life feeling fulfilled as an entrepreneur?

That answer I did not like.

Three months later as I was struggling with my recovery I began to write what was to be a manual for Jeremy’s life. To give him the principles, the universals and the way to build something that creates connection, raving fans and has an impact while generating a profit.

You see, Jeremy had already begun his entrepreneurial journey, three years earlier at age sixteen and was continuing to build his business at the time of my accident.

It is this manual of principles and universals that I used throughout my decades as an entrepreneur and as an adviser building all kinds of businesses. These principles have led Jeremy to build his business to well above six figures at a young 25 years old.
